The exciting history of judo

Judo is based on the movements of Ju-jitsu. The origin of Ju-jitsu can be traced back two thousand years, though it is likely that the forms practiced than more like modern Japanese sumo wrestling or Judo were as we know it.

Some historians think that Ju-jitsu originated in China and came to Japan around 1645, but there is evidence that it was known in Japan, long before this date. The reasons for the growth of Ju-jitsu were: (1) the need for fighters to a means of self-defense on occasions when they were forbidden to wear their swords, and (2) the tradition that a warrior should be able to overcome a person of lower grade without the use of weapons.

In the middle of the eighteenth century, however, feudalism dropped in Japan, and therefore the martial arts.Ju-jitsu masters were forced to close their schools for the absence of the pupils, and the art can be lost entirely, but for a Dr. Jigoro Kano. He was at that time a student at the University of Tokyo, and became interested in Ju-jitsu, because he was of small stature and he had heard that Ju-jitsu Tricks people like him to keep track of their own in combat with larger people might. Kano studied under different masters, select those tricks that he most valuable for its own study thought.

In 1882 he opened his own school, the Kodokwan, in Tokyo. As he progressed, Canoe came to see that Ju-jitsu more than a means of defense against attacks was; it was a way of life that developed from the intellect and the spirit. Canoe selected these movements most suitable for the practice as a sport of the many that he had learned, and he called the system he compiled "Judo" as distinct from "Ju-jitsu". "Judo "means" the gentle way ", in distinction" Ju-jitsu, "which means" the gentle art ".

"Judo" is the word used is now all over the world, and the principles of Dr. Kano have a lasting effect on the traffic. There is a very high tradition of good conduct and helpfulness among students.

The Judo beginning in the United States is rather vague, but it is believed that sport was brought to America by president Theodore Roosevelt who witness an exhibition, was so impressed that he immediately a Japanese Instructor of whom he took lessons imported.Today there are many Judo clubs in the u.s., though most of them have connections with the main organisation, the Judo Black Belt Federation.

In Great Britain was an early school be adopted the Budokwai, in London, founded in 1918 by Mr g. Koizumi.Mr. Tani was the Chief Instructor. before the first world war there were about 40 clubs in Great Britain are affiliated with the school, and of course a number of independent schools as well.Judo became so popular after the war, however, that a larger organization was needed, and the British Judo Association was founded in 1948, with the Budokwai and member clubs as early members. In the last twelve years roughly four hundred clubs have to join this organization.

The popularity of Judo as a sport all over the world today is so great that it is recognized by the Olympic Committee for inclusion in the Olympic Games.
