The difference between Karate and Kung Fu

For many people, especially those who are not familiar with martial arts, the question often arises as to what the difference between karate and kung fu. When watching someone do different moves the untrained eye, it's hard to say what style that person is doing. Even those who are just beginners can sometimes be confused about the different styles to further exposure to them will reveal how different they are genuine.

Historically, the inhabitants of the islands of Okinawa just south of Japan exposed to Chinese martial arts, thanks to its proximity to China. Developed over time and the Japanese encountered their own styles that is now known as karate from the original styles of Chinese influence. Although both use many similar techniques, most kung fu styles usually more variety of techniques in comparison with karate systems. It's almost like the Japanese streamlined the number of techniques from Chinese to develop systems of karate. The Japanese also the techniques in karate run as they became more linear way changed. This is particularly evident in the forms or katas (traditional sequence of set of moves) where karate techniques are performed with sharp movements that have different stop and go movements.

In kung fu forms, movements are accompanied by the use of more circular techniques, in particular with the hands. This circular movements this forms a more visually elegant in its appearance as techniques seem to flow from one to another. There is less stop and go with most Chinese styles. This is why some martial artists, especially in North America, often to kung fu styles as "soft" while karate and tae kwon do "hard" styles. This isn't to say that hard styles such as karate or tae kwon do more powerful than soft martial arts styles. The term "soft" is a bit misleading, because the power of circular moves is often hidden. Circular movements can generate as much power as linear found in hard styles. Most kung fu forms are also usually more complex and longer duration than most karate. For most, a soft style form will look much more exotic, while a karate form more straightforward in terms of techniques.Interestingly enough, there are styles such as karate goju who quite a lot of circular techniques. Kempo styles are considered to be a hybrid of Chinese and Okinawa techniques with both circular and linear techniques. There are also many more different styles of kung fu in comparison with karate.

Martial arts weapons is found in both kung fu and karate styles but different sets of weapons are used in each system. Just like the blank forms, the hand with karate kata weapons are also more linear compared to those with kung fu weapons have more circular movements. As expected, there is a lot more variety of different Chinese weapons than found in the Japanese karate styles.

Traditionally, wearing a white practitioners of karate called a gi uniform with overlapping kimono-like top. Less traditional schools such as those in North America will allow colored uniforms. A colored belt will be the finishing touch to the gi with of course the black belt for those on instructor level ranking. Most of the time and especially within a dojo studio, karate stylists will shoes not every during exercise. Most of the kung fu stylists will carry very different looking uniforms consisting of tops with Chinese frog-' style ' buttons instead of overlapping fronts such as karate gi top. the uniforms can black or a variety of colors with often lighter fabrics such as satin and shoes are usually worn. The modern acrobatic Chinese martial arts of wushu can function satin uniforms with many different bright colors. Many kung fu schools use just t-shirts and baggy pants as uniforms.Satin colored wings are often worn to indicate grade students but this is actually more of a North American style as most Chinese martial arts schools in Asia not ranking in the uniforms.

There is generally more variety of techniques, styles, weapons and found in the Chinese kung fu systems compared with karate uniforms. But that's not to say that a system or style of martial art is superior to another. They are just different, and to the observer, may come down to personal preference. some prefer kung fu and some prefer karate. some ambitious martial artists who have a well-rounded education to practice both styles.

Karate started in Okinawa, which is one of the many islands that make up Japan. Okinawa was invaded by the very organised samurai clans of the larger Japanese islands. The Islanders developed okinawan karate to defend themselves. Okinawan karate was kept alive, passed from master student through the generations and eventually became integrated into the school system of the for all of Japan

Original Okinawa karate wass divided in styles that are named after the cities in Okinawa that they were developed.Shuri-te, Tomari-te and Naha-te are all derived from cities in Okinawan karate Okinawa. is strongly influenced by the Chinese kung Fu or kempo. Found often from mainland China are traded and friendly relations.

Today, there seem to be a huge number of karate styles. All are, however, in a somehow derived from okinawan karate. One okinawan Master Gichin Funakoshi knowledge karate school system with the Japanese shotokan style. are became one of the most popular karate styles in the world. Often students would leave to create their own style. Much honor their teachers instruction for the preservation of the art, but often students would disagreements with their teachers and move on their own.

Whether original okinawan karate style mixture, it is important that the style is a detailed curriculum, opportunity for future progress ranks above black belt and many students and instructors. you want to be sure if the school goes around for a long time if you're going to spend years of study.

Some schools are run for profit, while others are not. You might say not-for-profit schools are closer to the original okinawan karate system where karate was passed down from father to son, master student. Of course, if we trained as they did in original Okinawa karate, there would be 1 or 2 students!

As long as the karate school the welfare of the students at heart, is that for a profit is not a bad thing. has been my own experience with not-for-profit schools, and I have great instructors are there are just so many dedicated teachers in the for-profit schools.

True okinawan karate is more about self defense than tournaments and competition, but competition is often important to young karate-ka.If you are involved in tournaments going then you will need the school is affiliated with other karate organisations and provides good coaching and tournament statement. Many major governing bodies issue education and coaching certification karate judges and officials. you want to make sure you or your children will compete in a safe and controlled environment and not a slugfest or free for everyone. So searching for qualified people.

Karate history and tradition

Karate is the art of self defense and counter attack without weapons. It is a Japanese word and in her native language literally means "empty hands". The history of karate is a fascinating subject. Karate as a method of self defense is emergence of hundreds of years ago in Japan. Originally, Karate (or earlier, Ju-jitsu) was practiced only by the nobility in Japan and in particular by the Samurai. The techniques were kept secret. The hoi polloi was denied the knowledge. It was a form of superiority that higher class can demonstrate to the ordinary people to prove that they are superior physical-even without weapons were!

The size and weight of your opponent can be used against him.Even a large 250-pound brute can be felled by a smaller, lighter man that the principles of karate. The Karate man knows the pressure points and focal point nerve centres of are bigger, heavier opponent-and strikes on this pressing point.

To quote from the encyclopedia Brittanica "several of these sensitive places, for example, the partially exposed nerve popularly known as the" funny-bone "and the complex of nerves in the stomach, called the solar plexus, elbow are known by the European Parliament, but the ju-jitsu expert is familiar with many others that after the compression of beaten or chokes, cause temporary paralysis of a more or less complete character.

Places like the arm pit, the ankle and wrist bones, the tendon runs down of the ear, the "Adam's Apple" and the nerves of the upper arm. In the fight against serious almost a keep or attack is resorted to, and a broken or badly sprained limb is the least that can happen to the victim. ... "

Karate was taught to the special imperial guards that protected from the Emperor of Japan. During the second world war were special Japanese shock troops taught the secrets of karate. By the end of the global conflict, were thousands of Japanese line troops accelerated courses given in karate, helping them overcome their physical and weight handicaps in hand combat with the enemy.

Karate history continued on through the 1940s. Many an ex-GI in the Pacific Theater of Operations, can tell you how even a measly Japanese soldier superhuman performance could perform. Karate is faster than judo, faster than ju-jitsu and deadlier than both! That's why Karate, when mastered, must be used with reservation and restraint.Karate should never be used as an aggressive action, but only to defend yourself against an attacker.

Karate is very dynamic and uses hundreds of body muscles. It helps develop body balance, posture, agility, coordination, and grace. In fact, Karate so popular in Japan today that thousands of women and teenagers are studying. in addition to its defensive qualities is the ideal exercise for their figures-keep them trim and lean. Many schools and universities in America today consider Karate to add to the curriculum.

Will you "that" with me?Suppose if you get home from work one night walks, a picture of a dark alley jumps and rope you arm behind your back.He threatens you. what work do you do?
For example, suppose you are walking with a female companion and she's insulted by a tough-looking hair. The roughneck is about 6 feet 4 inches tall, has large, sinewy arms and makes use of profanity that might even be a tough Marine sergeant blush! what work do you do?

Your answer might be "that's never happened to me.Anyway, that's what we have police for "but remember that an attacker or a thief never attacks if the law around. only when he thinks you that only, unarmed, will he strike. and the difficult hombre will only be a good idea when he thinks he is bigger and bigger than you. of course, you can't walk the streets armed, such as the cowboys in the old West, but with a knowledge of karate you your hands, feet and elbows in powerful weapons immediately!

Karate history and practice of karate can never ending topics of research. take every opportunity to learn more!

Would like to start of karate? How to choose the right karate for you

What to look for and how to prepare yourself, so you can confidently in a karate school walk and not just what to expect, but don't know what to do!

People have practiced for thousands of years of martial arts. There are many reasons why people practice martial arts and the reasons have changed and evolved over the years.

In times of war, was fighting skills learned of karate that were the main reason to train, in times of peace, health and character development took precedence and now we have the competition side of karate, which is enormous!

Master Gichin Funakoshi, who is the founder of Shotokan karate was, believed that the development of character was the most important part of the martial arts. He believed and passed on the philosophy of, no first attack in karate.

Seems to be the modern day martial arts go in one, or a combination of four directions,

1. self defense.

2. Fitness.

3. health and character development.

4. Competition training.

The self-defense aspect of karate is clear to see, but if the karateka (someone who karate practices), not the train with the right attitude, it doesn't matter how many moves they teach, or for how long they train, will they be ineffective in a street situation.

Fitness
The physical profits seen by practicing karate are clear.
Karate is very anaerobic, short explosive eruptions. Many sensei (karate teacher), it will advise of their students to compliment their karate with aerobic exercises such as walking, cycling, swimming or even walking. Many of karate dojo (training hall), the philosophy that you should not practice karate for fitness, instead, you need to be adjusted measured practice karate! this is a very confusing philosophy for someone new to karate, but as time passes, the martial arts this philosophy will understand.

Master Gichin Funakoshi said, "karate begins and ends with respect"
Respect, discipline, courtesy, effort, dedication, humility, performance, perseverance, etc, etc, all these positive human attributes are encouraged and taught in most karate schools.

Competition arenas are a great place to test your karate skills without harm to yourself or others. key areas of karate are tested in competition (shiai), speed, timing, distance, balance, spirit, comments, etc, etc..

Some karateka does not agree with competition, they believe if someone has a bad character, competition can make things worse, some karateka disrespect of their opponents, instructors and referees will show, but I think this is very rare and the majority of the martial arts on contest Show respect and humility, whether they win or lose.

Chose the right Karate Dojo for you!

It is important to know what you want from karate, if it's self defense, you will have to find a karate school that place stress on the street self-defense training. If it's fitness, you can not spruce or kata (Forms), but a lot of stamina training. competition training you need to find a dojo which focus on the competition side of karate. If you're looking for health and character development, it is possible a karate dojo that practice kata (Forms), kihon (basic karate moves) and kumite (sparring), a majority of the time. the majority of the karate schools practice of a mixture of the above areas, but before you start of the training programme and make sure it is what you are looking for.

Karate from three k's

Kata (Forms). The best way to describe kata, is a series of karate strikes, blocks, kicks, and maneuvers, compiled to form a pattern, similar to a gymnastics floor display with stress during the kata placed on technique, fighting spirit, relaxation, speed and power.

Kumite (sparring). where two karateka partner together and attack and defend against each other, karate kumite, for example, begins with very basic moves. Attacker steps in with a single punch and the Defender blocks with a single block and counter strike. over time the karate sparring is evolving into free sparring, where anything goes.

Many karate dojo to learn the philosophy of Hisatsu, ' I ' or ' 'eindigen in one fell swoop.

Kihon (basics). Practice of the basic strikes, blocks, kicks, and views is a fundamental part of karate training, whether it's contest, self-defense or regular training, the karate techniques must be practiced until they become second nature and when needed, just happen, in contrast to consciously think about which movement to use.

The interests of humanity in karate

Karate was formed on the model by Kendo and Judo. It was referred to as a "style" of Martial Arts in itself, but this never came about, perhaps because of WW2, or there may be other reasons. In any case produced the original school system Shotokan-Ryu, Wado-Ryu and Shito-Ryu. Goju-Ryu much later was developed and was accepted in the Okinawa school system many years after the original karate program of Itosu.

If there is not a review of judo and jujutsu, Kenjutsu in Kendo have been, it is possible that this doctor would not have survived. They were frowned upon by the new society. "too ' Likewise Okinawa was not popular and considered a violent activity by the general Community, the more refined art of karate was successful and was responsible for the continuation of these Okinawan Martial Art, albeit in a different form.

Itosu realized that education is the key that came with the education of humanity and understanding, and less need for civilian self-defence. Okinawa had no organised sports such as we know it today, so an exercise regime, such as karate, a brilliant stroke of genius of his side was. Karate had to an exercise program of the community, an educational organization for the promotion of humanity and a way back to brutal self defense would be necessary.

Unfortunately, karate, a sports and recreational activity that taught by both a high and a low grade. Only few know what it is that they are education and concentrate on all the wrong aspects. The physical techniques are not well understood so that the basic principles of kata are taught as the foundation of karate. The humane aspects are rarely discussed or, via the Dojo Kun and paid lip service only be taught.

Karate in Okinawa, a small backward country at that time, with very few people involved, was developed, but we believe somehow that they have a complete system that will allow one to save of 4, 8 or more attackers have developed. The secret of karate is common sense and practice a combination of physical and intellectual study (bunburyodo).

One of the mistakes that created today is to sell of karate as a product, it's not something that can be bought and sold as a hamburger. You pay for someone's knowledge, skill and ability to pass on important information about health, fitness, compete in the sport and defend yourself. You pay a fee for an educational service.Apparently is no longer important who you learn, but at the end of the day, the only rank you hold is that of personal knowledge and capacity.

How can we teach? By mankind. I don't think it can actually be taught, but maybe can be fed and nurtured. It's a bit like think karate builds character. If a person of bad character than that may be impossible to change.

It is important to ensure that a sense of honesty and treating others the benchmark of a karate class. If we allow training partners punch, hitting and kicking just mm is of our body, then we trust in their character and faith in their humanity.

Nobody likes to be exploited, and we are brought up to believe and trust in those who are in authority such as teachers. Hypocrisy destroys by karate teacher that confidence, especially in the area of morality and ethics. Poor instruction can damage a person's character karate.Poor role models can affect a student of any age in the wrong direction.

It is a great responsibility in teaching anything, but especially karate. If there is abuse the consequences are very serious. definitely can karate training makes everyone invincible but it's a dangerous for those who do not self-defense skills.

Students have to with great caution about the effects of a new striking are taught. Many people suffer serious injury from being knocked to the ground, not of the punch but from hitting their heads on a hard floor. How can you give someone a loaded pistol with no instructions in the why and when, and are not responsible if another human being is mutilated?

Fortunately, most people reasonably sensible and humane. I remember a case where a karate student was convicted of killing his own unborn child by his mother kick in the stomach when she was pregnant! We all know of karate instructors who have accused of crimes against children.

If karate is to be taught as a dance aerobics class at the gym, there is a problem. Aerobics is about health and fitness, karate can be used in this way, but there is still a need for explanation and standards of conduct.

Are you a karate teacher, a sports coach or a gym instructor? Is your place of statement a dojo, a Club House or a gym? All are worth it, but you must not fool yourself or others. If your level of expertise is of a low level than admit to it and let others do not think you are an expert. Otherwise, unintentionally, gives you the experts a bad name.

Karate is pleasant, that is to say seriously fun. one cannot pretend to be a doctor, a dentist, a solicitor or a karate teacher, these are all called Sensei, someone who has reached a certain stage of understanding, not someone who still has to give than the novice stage.

A black belt or black and white belt does not have the right to learn of the wearer. They must have a thorough knowledge of the content and the training in the principles of education. If they are to learn a watered down version of the sport, as some suggest, should they know enough not to cause damage to those within their duty of care.
