Karate books-what books to use to learn karate

Learn that karate by books sounds a bit, I'd say at least "strange" doesn't it?

I think at least for beginners. After decades of practicing Karate, like I did, it sounds not strange at all anymore. here's why:

People tend to learn faster and easier when they are either very curios about a subject or if the brain can dots ' connect '. This means that when the newly learned content fits already learned material the brain is able to associate it with an existing context and hence it is easier for the brain to retain the new material. And that is exactly what books offer: background information and additional material to already existing knowledge.

Hence his Karate books a great way to improve your understanding of karate, and to learn faster because you understand and link learned new material with an already existing knowledge-context.

I tend to divide Karate books in the following categories:
KihonKata KumiteStrategieGeschiedenisWoorden books

Karate techniques can be covered in Kata, Kumite or Kihon books if they are specific style.Advanced techniques can also be covered in General Kumite or (Fighting) strategy books which is also a specific style or karate style agnostic.

What to expect from books in these categories

Here's a quick overview on what to expect if you're looking for Karate books in a specific section.

Kihon Karate books

Books in this section focus on basics. The emphasis is on the correct postures and techniques.Proper techniques include punches (usually fist in beginner books or also open hand techniques or even more special two or one finger techniques such as Ippon Ken).

Books in this section tend to either come out as different volumes or as a single comprehensive book.

Karate Kata books

Books in this section are very likely to be specific style. The reason is that the different styles tend to have completely different Katas or at least different names for the same Kata (often the case if you Shito-Ryu and Shotokan Katas compares).

Kumite Karate books

Book about Karate Kumite, specific style or completely style agnostic. Usually photos will show various fighting positions and positions of the hands and movements, but in a style agnostic book only ambition fighters.

Strategy books

Strategy books are probably Karate style agnostic. those books learn mostly about how to behave in the fight against situations or how to behave in a League of karate.

Karate history books

Books in this category cover the history and early developments and all involved in the development Karate models. depending on what style they cover and how far they go back in time they most probably best associated martial arts will also cover, such as Kung-Fu.

Karate Dictionaries

Dictionaries are important to understand the Japanese terms in your own native language.
